New wineskins

People asked Jesus why his disciples didn't fast, like John's disciples. He answered that wedding guests don't fast while the bridegroom is with them. And then this image. The bottles in the King James are wineskins.

Wine was kept in leather skins. Old leather becomes stiff. New wine is still fermenting and expands. In an old skin it bursts. What is new in Jesus doesn't simply fit old forms. Sometimes the form has to be renewed too.

Question for today

Which old form in my life has become too stiff for something new?

Prayer

Lord, you bring something new. Make me supple enough to receive it. Renew the form too. Amen.
