Word 22 of 491Prayer

If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.

If you knew

Jesus asks a woman for a drink and then turns the conversation on its head. Living water was an ordinary expression for running spring water, better than still water from a rain cistern. So the woman thinks practically: you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep.

The heart of it lies in three words: if you knew. If you knew what God wants to give, and who is asking you for water. The one who asks is the one who gives. We often overlook God, because he looks different from what we expect.

Question for today

What would I ask God for if I really knew what he wants to give?

Prayer

Father, I often ask you for too little, because I don't know what you want to give. Make me unafraid to ask. Amen.
