A question in return

The leaders in the temple asked Jesus by what authority he acted. He answered with a question, as Jewish teachers often did. Was the baptism of John from heaven, or of men?

They conferred. If they said from heaven, he would ask why they hadn't believed John. If they said of men, the people would turn against them. So they said: we cannot tell. Whoever won't answer honestly gets no answer either.
