Salt and peace

Just before, Jesus says something puzzling: every one shall be salted with fire. It is one of the hardest sentences in Mark, and interpreters have puzzled over it a great deal. Perhaps it is about trials that purify.

The ending is clear, though. Salt gives flavour and preserves. Be people with flavour, with character. And be at peace with one another. He says this to the same disciples who had just argued about who was the greatest.

Question for today

With whom do I need to keep the peace today?

Prayer

Lord, give me salt: character and flavour. And give me peace with the people around me. Amen.
