Go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish you catch. When you open its mouth, you will find a four-drachma coin.

A coin in a fish
Tax collectors asked Peter whether his master paid the temple tax. Half a shekel per person. Jesus said that as the Son he was really exempt. But so as not to offend anyone, he paid anyway.
And then this striking detail: go fishing, and in the mouth of the first fish there is a coin. The Greek says a stater, enough for two. Only Matthew tells this story, the former tax collector who knew how taxes worked. There's humour in it, and care. For Peter the fisherman, a fish is the payment.
Question for today
Where do I give up my rights so as not to give needless offence?
Prayer
Lord, you provide in surprising ways. Teach me to combine freedom with wisdom, and to trust that you provide. Amen.
