Get behind Me, Satan! For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.

Back in line
Just before, Peter had said the finest thing: thou art the Christ. When Jesus explained that he had to suffer, Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. He didn't want a Messiah like that.
Jesus' answer is harsh. But notice the words behind me. The same words with which he once called Peter: come ye after me. Jesus doesn't send him away. He puts him back in his place, as a follower instead of an adviser.
Question for today
Where am I trying to tell Jesus how things should be done?
Prayer
Lord, I often want to go ahead of you instead of following. Put me back behind you, where I belong. Amen.
