An ending that came later

To be honest: this closing line is not in the oldest manuscripts of Matthew. It was almost certainly added later, in the worship of the first Christians. An early form already appears in the Didache, a church manual from around the year 100.

The King James includes it, but many modern translations put it in brackets or a footnote. Still, it is a beautiful response from the church to the prayer of Jesus. After all the asking, it ends in praise. The kingdom, the power and the glory belong to God, not to us.

Question for today

Can I end today with praise, after all my asking?

Prayer

Father, after all my asking, I want to end with praise.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
