The golden rule

A famous Jewish teacher, Hillel, said a generation earlier: what is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour. The book of Tobit says something similar. Those rules tell you what to avoid.

Jesus puts it positively. Not only: do no harm. But: do the good you would like to receive yourself. That is a fundamental difference. You can keep the first rule by doing nothing. Not the second.

Question for today

What would I like someone to do for me today, and can I do that for someone else?

Prayer

Lord, make me someone who doesn't only avoid doing harm, but actively does good. Amen.
