The first words
These are the oldest words of Jesus the Gospels preserve. He was twelve. After the Passover in Jerusalem, his parents had already travelled a day towards home before they noticed he wasn't with them. After three days of searching they found him in the temple, listening and asking questions.
His answer surprises them. He speaks of his Father, and doesn't mean Joseph. Yet afterwards he goes home with them to Nazareth and is obedient. Knowing where you belong and simply doing your duty go together in him.

Father, even as a boy Jesus knew where he belonged. Let me know that I belong to you too. And then help me simply to be faithful in my everyday life. Amen.
