But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

What your left hand doesn't know

Jesus warns against people who sound a trumpet before them when they give. Perhaps it's a figure of speech. In the temple there were thirteen offering chests shaped like a ram's horn, through which the money rattled.

The image of the hands is almost comic. Give so quietly that you hardly notice it yourself. Not to look good, not even for your own sake. Simply because it is good.

Question for today

What good do I do without anyone needing to know?

Prayer

Father, you see in secret. Make me generous without an audience. Let my good deeds be yours and not mine. Amen.
