But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be obvious to men.

Fasting without show
Devout Jews in that time often fasted twice a week. The Didache, a church manual from around the year 100, says Christians should do the same, but on different days: Wednesday and Friday.
Jesus doesn't say: if you should fast. He says: when you fast. He assumes it will happen. But without a pitiful face and without an audience. Fasting isn't an achievement, but making room for God.
Question for today
What can I set aside to make room for God?
Prayer
Father, teach me to let go of what fills me up, so that there is room for you. Without show, only for you. Amen.
