Merciful like the Father
At the same point in Matthew it says: be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father is perfect. Luke says: merciful. Together they show that God's perfection is mercy.
The Hebrew word for mercy is related to the word for womb. It is about a love that comes from deep inside, the way a mother feels for her child.
