Away from Me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’

No shortcut
The devil tries a third time. He takes Jesus up a high mountain and shows him all the kingdoms of the world. All this is yours, he says, if you kneel before me. Only now does Jesus call him by name: Satan, which means adversary. He sends him away with the heart of Israel's faith: you worship God alone.
The offer was a shortcut: kingship without suffering and without a cross. The devil offers a good end by the wrong means. Jesus refuses that shortcut and chooses to stay faithful to his Father.
Question for today
Which shortcut to something I really want would cost me my faithfulness?
Prayer
You took the long road, Lord Jesus, when the short one was offered. Give me strength to say no to what looks quick but is wrong. Amen.
