Who is this coming from Edom, in crimson-stained garments, robed in splendour, marching in his great strength? It is I, proclaiming righteousness, mighty to save. Why are your clothes red, like one who treads the winepress? I have trodden the winepress alone.
One of the most impressive and chilling images in the prophets: God as a warrior returning from judgement. Revelation uses it for Christ as the rider on a white horse, clothed in a vesture dipped in blood, who 'treadeth the winepress'. Strikingly, his robe is dipped in blood before the battle, and many interpreters read that as his own blood. It is an image of God's judgement, not a call to violence; the rider's only weapon is the sword out of his mouth, the word.
