The shepherd asks for his wages and is given thirty pieces of silver. God says ironically: 'this magnificent price at which they valued me', throw it to the potter in the house of the LORD.

According to Exodus 21:32, thirty pieces of silver was the compensation for a slave who had been killed. Judas throws the money into the temple and the priests buy the potter's field with it. Honest to know: Matthew names Jeremiah as his source ('Jeremy the prophet' in the King James). He is probably combining Zechariah with Jeremiah 18 and 19 (the potter, the valley of Hinnom) and Jeremiah 32 (buying a field), and naming the greater prophet. This is a classic question in Bible study.
