This commandment is not too difficult for you, nor beyond your reach. It is not in heaven, so that you would have to ask: who will go up for us? Nor is it beyond the sea. No, the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can obey it.

Moses says that God's law is within reach and near. Paul reads the text again, with Christ in it. Nobody has to climb to heaven to bring Christ down, or descend into the deep to bring him up from the dead. God has already done that. The word that is near is now the word of faith. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. A free, creative reading, which shows how Paul related the whole of Scripture to Christ.
