Jacob blesses his sons and says the sceptre will not depart from Judah until 'Shiloh' comes, the one whom the nations will obey.
'Shiloh' is a puzzling word; many interpreters read it as 'he to whom it belongs'. The ancient Jewish translation Targum Onkelos renders it: 'until the Messiah comes'. So this is not only a Christian reading. Jesus descends from Judah; in Revelation he is called 'the Lion of the tribe of Juda'.
