The righteous Branch
The Old Testament
Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and He will reign wisely as King and will administer justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
Jeremiah 23:5-6

God will raise up for David a righteous Branch who will reign as king. His name will be: 'The LORD our righteousness'. In Zechariah the Branch is both king and priest.
In Israel, king and priest were strictly separate offices. Zechariah sees one person who is both. The letter to the Hebrews works this out exactly: Jesus is king and high priest. A detail: the Septuagint translates 'Branch' with anatole, rising, and Zacharias uses that very word for the Messiah in Luke 1:78, where the King James calls it 'the dayspring from on high'.
