Through the prophet Nathan, God promises David a descendant whose kingdom will last for ever. God will be a father to him and he will be a son to God.

This is the foundation under all later hopes of a 'son of David'. The promise is first about Solomon (2 Samuel 7:14 speaks of punishment if he does wrong), but 'for ever' reaches beyond one king. When David's royal house fell in 586 BC, this promise remained open. In Luke the angel Gabriel uses almost the same words.
