He took up our sicknesses and carried our pain.
The King James reads griefs and sorrows here. The Hebrew words also mean sicknesses and pains, and that is how Matthew quotes them: 'Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.' Matthew applies the verse to the healings Jesus did during his life, even before the cross. In Pentecostal and charismatic churches this is a key text for faith in healing. Peter puts the emphasis on sins ('by whose stripes ye were healed'). Both readings stand side by side in the New Testament.
