Daniel's seventy weeks

The Old Testament

Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and will have nothing. Then the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations have been decreed.

Seventy 'weeks' are determined to make an end of sins and to make reconciliation. After a fixed number of weeks from the command to rebuild Jerusalem, an anointed one comes; then he is cut off, and city and sanctuary are destroyed.

The New Testament does not quote this text directly; the references above are indirect. Seventy weeks of years is 490 years. Depending on which Persian decree is taken as the starting point (458 or 445 BC), many Christian calculations arrive at around AD 27 to 33, the period of Jesus' ministry. Other interpreters read the text as referring to the crisis under the Syrian king Antiochus IV in the second century BC. This is one of the most disputed prophecies.
