A shoot from the stump of Jesse
The Old Testament
Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.

From the cut-down stump of Jesse, David's father, a new shoot springs up. The Spirit of the LORD rests on him: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might. He judges justly and the nations seek him.
The image is powerful: the royal house has been cut down, only a stump is left, and yet new life grows out of it. The Hebrew word for branch is netser. Many interpreters think Matthew is alluding to it when he says the prophets foretold that he would be called a 'Nazarene', a play on Nazareth. Notice too that the Messiah is described here first of all as someone on whom the Spirit rests.
